Inner
Wisdom, Inner Winds:
Meditation as a Path to Inner Peace
Meditation can pacify a turbulent mind,
and lead to peaceful, relaxed yet alert states of being. Such inner calm
is essential for genuine happiness. Learn meditative techniques drawn from
Buddhist tantric teachings about the system of subtle energy channels and
winds, similar to that of Eastern healing modalities like acupuncture and
traditional Chinese medicine. Gain experience in powerful methods for
transforming the mind and bringing about inner peace.

Lift
Every Voice and Sing
African-Americans and the Building of America
The Director’s Wednesday Seminar
Did you know the Civil Rights Movement
began long before Martin Luther King? That the Black Church had women
preachers before most white churches? That the first sit-in was in 1942 in
Chicago? Much of African-American history still remains obscure to most
white Americans, especially their vital contribution to the building of
this country. This series will focus on key figures in the rise of Black
Americans from slavery to fuller participation in mainstream America,
heroes like Harriet Tubman, W.E.B. DuBois, Marcus Garvey, and Summit’s
own Rev. Florence Spearing Randolph, prominent community organizer.
Fascinating vignettes from the "stony road" so many have trod
toward freedom.

Will
the Real Mary Please Stand Up?
The Mother of Jesus as Sister and Symbol
Bible for a New Day
Who was the young Jewish mother of the
man who claimed to be Messiah? How has her legend grown through the
centuries? In this study, we’ll get behind the great symbols of Mary as
Mother, Virgin, Intercessor and Friend to look at the biblical and
post-biblical records, and how Mary embodies aspects of the ancient, and
suppressed, "Hebrew Goddess." Using the Bible, the
second-century Protoevangelium or Infancy Gospel of James,
and art through the ages, we’ll explore why Mary is coming alive as a
powerful symbol for so many people, both Christians and those of many
other faiths.

The
Inner Eye of Love
Fundamentals of Contemplative Prayer
How can we learn to see life in the
light of grace, perceiving and communing with the Good, the True, and the
Beautiful? Live from your spiritual center, the inner eye of love.
Contemplation is the art of being present to the God who dwells at the
heart of things—in all times, places, people, situations. Contemplative
prayer and meditation are part of every world religion, and at the core
involve simple practices available to any serious seeker. We’ll explore
three major contemplative practices through times of meditation,
presentation, silence, and discussion. You’ll leave ready to begin or
deepen your practice.

The Spiral
Quest
Meaning-Making in Science and Spirituality
Rediscover your innate sense of
curiosity and adventure by remembering how to "ask the questions that
have no answers" (Wendell Berry). As children, we learned by asking
such questions and responding to what intrigued and interested us. We
expanded in the directions that our souls heard calling, and we trusted
our voices of imagination and possibility. Our thoughts, imaginations, and
instincts still operate this way—shifting, leaping, linking, and dancing
with and around each other—but as adults we often try to shut them down
with definitive answers and firmly-held opinions. In both the realms of
science and spirit, however, learning and practicing inquiry can remind us
what it feels like to "live the questions," stretching our minds
and growing our souls. Join the spiral quest of taking notice, following
curiosity, forming questions, finding patterns, making meaning, and
expressing insight.
