Parenting as a Spiritual Practice
Meeting the Challenge of Holy Work

Raising children can be one of our greatest learning experiences if we’re open to the spiritual resources within us. We learn about ourselves and life in different ways, but parenting can be one of our most potent spiritual paths. We will discuss the spirituality of parenting and what it has to teach us about love, presence, grace, wisdom, joy, patience, sacrifice, and compassion. Discover ways to bring this holy work into balance by living in the tension between control and leniency, fear and trust, holding on and letting go.

Soul Cards
A Visual Journal for Self-Discovery

Using the process of SoulCollageTM as described in Seena B. Frost’s book, SoulCollage, create your own "living journal," a set of cards representing aspects of your personality or soul. Making small collages with magazine and art images and phrases, you will find ways to describe emotions, feelings and thoughts. Your growing deck will help you identify and image your diverse inner parts, both beautiful and shadowy, and reflect on the external guides and allies in your life, visible and invisible, human and archetypal. Soul cards are a tangible way to know yourself in your diversity and depth and discover wisdom within yourself which will amaze you. Making them will joyfully deepen your understanding of yourself and your relationships with your family, community, world, dreams, symbols, and Spirit. Besides all this, creating them is just plain fun!

Journaling the Path to Healing and Creativity
A Monthly Circle for Writing and More

In several of his books, Parker Palmer decribes our lives as a "hidden wholeness" between our inner and outer realities. Journaling can help access these inner hopes, dreams and expectations which can then bring better balance to our hectic outer lives. Through poetry, guided meditation and creative writing in our journals we will explore our inner gifts of which we may or may not be aware that can then give new energy and direction to our daily lives. At least three of the sessions in the coming year will focus specifically on our dreams and the way they provide information and sustenance to our life-journey. Each session is both individual and continuous so no prior experience is needed.

New Spiritual Cinema Series

Movies with Meaning
A Monthly Film and Discussion Evening

Seen any good movies lately? A film can touch us at such deep levels we want to talk to somebody about what it meant, how it affected us, how it’s shaping our outlook on life. Now’s your chance to meet with others to talk about movies—both famous and obscure, new and old—that carry deep emotional meaning and spiritual messages. Each month, watch the scheduled film yourself on video or DVD; then join us for guided discussion. Selected clips will help us remember what moved us so deeply and spark the discussion.

The Light in the Body
Healing Energies in Daily Life

How can we use the body’s own inner powers to maintain maximum wellness, and deal with health challenges? Standard medical intervention can be helpful and lifesaving when needed, but nature has given us the rich gift of self-healing which every person should know how to access. This practical day will give you an overview of natural wellness and healing, as well as specific practices to improve your energy, deal with the preconditions that can lead to disease, and supplement conventional therapies.

Presenters:

Denise Rizvi, N.D. a certified Naturopath, will frame our day with an overview of how body, mind, and nature cooperate to maintain our health, then lead us in "Body Journeying," a deep exercise that will train you in listening to the body’s subtle signals, learning how to understand the language of the physical self.

Ali Rizvi, a Shamanic Energy healer, will take you deeper into the body’s mystery, to a direct encounter with the energy centers, the chakras, that can be modulated to bring energy and healing to various parts of the self.

Bonnie Lundberg will give you practical training in the self-care benefits of Jin Shin Jyutsu, an ancient art of freeing and harmonizing the body’s energy, now used in major hospitals. Learn how to affect body, mind and spirit and bring relaxation, healing, and wellbeing with simple self-massage exercises.

Seeing the Spiritual World
A "Psychic and Sacred" Event

Belief that some have the ability to sense and feel what’s "beneath the surface" has been part of every culture and religion in history. What if everyone has at least a small portion of this gift? ESP or deep intuition is part of our equipment, a facet of our emotional intelligence. Nancy Weber, nurse, healer, and psychic intuitive, featured on TV’s Psychic Detectives, will relate her experiences working to help the police in criminal cases as well as putting people in touch with their own souls. Bob Morris will share insights from the "spiritual senses and gifts" in Western mystical tradition. Most importantly, you’ll practice using your own innate powers. Come and learn to see the world differently!

Dances of Universal Peace
Movements for Harmony and Healing

The Dances of Universal Peace are simple, meditative, joyous, multicultural, circle dances that use sacred phrases, chants, music, and movements from the many traditions of the earth to touch the spiritual essence within ourselves and others. The Dances focus on peace and harmony creating a sense of solidarity and community while celebrating the underlying unity of all the spiritual traditions of the world. By experiencing these many traditions, we gain a greater understanding and appreciation of other cultures, as well as our own heritage. There are no performers nor audience in these dances—new arrivals and old hands form the circle together.

Spiritual Direction
Wisdom from Henri Nouwen for
Leading Others on the Long Walk of Faith

How do we live spiritually from the heart in a world of ambiguity and distraction? Spiritual direction and spirituality groups provide relationships where we can cultivate the discipline, practice, and accountability necessary for an intentional spiritual journey. Learn how to lead others to explore the questions that arise as we travel the "long walk of faith"—questions like "Where do I begin?" "Who is God for me?" and "Where do I belong?"

This workshop will provide the opportunity for spiritual directors and spiritual group leaders to learn how to guide groups and individuals through Henri Nouwen’s course on spiritual direction, presented for the first time in Spiritual Direction: Wisdom for the Long Walk of Faith. This new posthumous work by Nouwen was developed by Michael Christensen, one of Nouwen’s students at Yale and Director of the Doctor of Ministry program at Drew, and Rebecca Laird, one of Nouwen’s publishing acquaintances and a spiritual director and ordained minister. The day will include separate tracks for spiritual directors and spirituality group leaders. Participants should read the book before the event and bring it with them.

All Hallows Eve
A Celtic Celebration for All Ages

A festive Halloween gathering for young and old alike! We’ll reclaim the old themes of the Celtic feast of Samhain to give new meaning and depth to the celebration of this ancient holiday. It’s a time when the "doors between the worlds" are wide open; a time for paying attention to all the "spirits" that can move the human soul; a time for honoring the ancestors and all those departed whom we hold in our hearts in love. We’ll make simple paper masks, welcome the dark time of the year, sing ancient tunes and light candles to remember those who have gone before. An Interweave favorite for many years, this celebration has changed attitudes toward dying for many, and given a new significance to Halloween for others. All welcome, costumed or not!
