Jews and Christians Study Text Together
THE BIBLE OF HATE VS. THE BIBLE OF LOVE
Rabbi Avi Friedman and The Rev. Robert Morris
The Bible can cause problems! One of the greatest challenges of our century is religious violence and prejudice using twisted interpretations of ancient Scriptural texts. The Hebrew Bible and Christian New Testament both contain some texts that have been, and are still used to incite intolerance, exclusion and hatred toward others, especially “out groups.” Many, perhaps most, Jewish and Christian interpreters through the centuries have weighed these text against the much larger message of “loving neighbor as self” and practicing righteousness and justice. Interpretations often become more generous over the centuries. Bob and Avi will deal with texts from Scripture and Tradition that deal with the “other,” abortion, the status of women, civil rights for minorities, religious violence and concerns that arise from participants. Love can trump hate! Learn how to use Scripture wisely.
