The Ground of Prayer: “Holding on”

Thursday Oct. 20, 7pm to 8:30pm

Prayer can connect us to our ground of being.  Why are we drawn to certain types of prayers at certain times of our lives? In the first session, spiritual guide Peter Savastano will help us explore and understand prayer from both an apophatic and cataphatic approach. Together we will explore how contemplative silence and the tactile practice of using prayer beads can lead us into a deepening of our prayer life and an opening of our hearts.

Peter Savastano, Ph.D., is Associate Professor of the Anthropology of Religion, Consciousness, Sexuality Gender & Race at Seton Hall University. He is a lifelong student of the world’s religious traditions.

The Ground of Prayer: “Pray it Forward”

Thursday Nov. 17, 7pm to 8:30pm

The Psalms are sometimes referred to as God’s Prayer Book. So, let’s pray like God prays. As is always the case in a loving relationship, to be heard one must listen well. Educator Carl Maulbeck will share his own spiritual practice of praying the psalms. Carl will lead us in listening with our hearts, as we enter into the poetry of the psalms. We will reflect and then pray as we tell our own soul stories and rewrite the psalms.

Carl Maulbeck, M.Ed., an educator for over 30 years whose own writing and spiritual practice has been shaped by the psalms.

The Ground of Prayer: “On for the Road”

Thursday Dec. 15, 7pm to 8:30pm

Prayer is the thing that takes us down the road of life. It is about our very ground being. It is the prayer of covenant that holds us and allows our life to become a prayer. Relational prayer is not just for mystics and saints.  In this final session, spiritual guide, Janet Aulet Maulbeck will lead us in guided meditation and sharing as we reflect on our own the sojourners prayer.

Janet Aulet Maulbeck is Executive Director of Interweave, spiritual guide and experienced retreat facilitator.
