Movies with Meaning
A Monthly Film and Discussion Evening

Seen any good movies lately? A film can touch us at such deep levels we want to talk to somebody about what it meant, how it affected us, how it’s shaping our outlook on life. Now’s your chance to meet with others to talk about movies—both famous and obscure, new and old—that carry deep emotional meaning and spiritual messages. Each month, watch the scheduled film yourself on video or DVD; then join us for guided discussion. Selected clips will help us remember what moved us so deeply and spark the discussion.

Series Kickoff: “On the Road Home” with filmmaker Christina Lundberg

Friday, Sept. 29 will be a special screening of “On the Road Home,” Christina Lundberg’s documentary of a life-changing pilgrimage that took her to Tibet , Nepal , India , and the U.S. for encounters with “remarkable women,” including Interweave Instructor, Board Member, and Franciscan nun Antonia Cooper, who will host the evening. Ms. Lundberg herself will be our guest. Join us at a special time, 7 p.m. , for light soup supper and screening of the whole film, followed by discussion with Ms. Lundberg and Sr. Antonia.

Other fall films will be:

Oct. 13    “Whale Rider”

Nov. 10    “Saint Ralph”

Dec. 8     “Benny & Joon”

The Light in the Body
Healing Energies in Daily Life

How can we use the body’s own inner powers to maintain maximum wellness, and deal with health challenges? Standard medical intervention can be helpful and lifesaving when needed, but nature has given us the rich gift of self-healing which every person should know how to access. This practical day will give you an overview of natural wellness and healing, as well as specific practices to improve your energy, deal with the preconditions that can lead to disease, and supplement conventional therapies.

Presenters:

Denise Rizvi, N.D. a certified Naturopath, will frame our day with an overview of how body, mind, and nature cooperate to maintain our health, then lead us in “Body Journeying,” a deep exercise that will train you in listening to the body’s subtle signals, learning how to understand the language of the physical self.

Ali Rizvi, a Shamanic Energy healer, will take you deeper into the body’s mystery, to a direct encounter with the energy centers, the chakras, that can be modulated to bring energy and healing to various parts of the self.

Bonnie Lundberg will give you practical training in the self-care benefits of Jin Shin Jyutsu, an ancient art of freeing and harmonizing the body’s energy, now used in major hospitals.  Learn how to affect body, mind and spirit and bring relaxation, healing, and wellbeing with simple self-massage exercises.

Spiritual Direction
Wisdom from Henri Nouwen
for Leading Others on the Long Walk of Faith

How do we live spiritually from the heart in a world of ambiguity and distraction? Spiritual direction and spirituality groups provide relationships where we can cultivate the discipline, practice, and accountability necessary for an intentional spiritual journey. Learn how to lead others to explore the questions that arise as we travel the “long walk of faith”—questions like “Where do I begin?” “Who is God for me?” and “Where do I belong?”
This workshop will provide the opportunity for spiritual directors and spiritual group leaders to learn how to guide groups and individuals through Henri Nouwen’s course on spiritual direction, presented for the first time in Spiritual Direction: Wisdom for the Long Walk of Faith. This new posthumous work by Nouwen was developed by Michael Christensen, one of Nouwen’s students at Yale and Director of the Doctor of Ministry program at Drew, and Rebecca Laird, one of Nouwen’s publishing acquaintances and a spiritual director and ordained minister. The day will include separate tracks for spiritual directors and spirituality group leaders. Participants should read the book before the event and bring it with them.

Henri Nouwen,
1932-1996,
was a Dutch Catholic priest and divinity professor
who later became a peace and civil rights activist.

"For a Christian, Jesus is the man in whom it has indeed become manifest that revolution and conversion cannot be separated in man's search for experiential transcendence. His appearance in our midst has made it undeniably clear that changing the human heart and changing human society are not separate tasks, but are as interconnected as the two beams of the cross."~Henri Nouwen

"Jesus was a revolutionary, who did not become an extremist, since he did not offer an ideology, but Himself. He was also a mystic, who did not use his intimate relationship with God to avoid the social evils of his time, but shocked his milieu to the point of being executed as a rebel. In this sense he also remains for nuclear man the way to liberation and freedom." ~
Henri Nouwen
