Jeremiah is the prophet "who conveys to us the most vivid sense of the man behind the words," says Robert Alter, commentator and translator of the Hebrew Bible. Jeremiah, who lives and preaches in the final decades of the Kingdom of Judah prior to its destruction in 581 BCE not only shares with us sermons full of YHWH's passion for his people, but the prophet's own sorrow as he feels compelled by God to warn about the impending invasion of the nation and destruction of the First Temple.
