Poet Wisdom
Reading Some Poems to Explore the Elusive and Intriguing Space of Liminality

Liminality is a state of disorientation that occurs in the middle of a crisis, a rite of passage, or a doorway to any deep change. Gregory Bateson once said in answer to a question about this: Yes, when we leave a state where we are—to go a place where we are not— we go through a state where we are not. Every time we cross a threshold into liminal space, we partake in the hero’s journey. Ask the caterpillar.

This afternoon we will look at poems by Louise Glick, Mary Oliver and Seamus Heaney. Terrific poets all, each has her/his unique voice, and taken together they explore various aspects of the liminal experience, such as crossing boundaries, entering into nonordinary states of consciousness, finding oneself while on unfamiliar ground. And all show us ways to find our way through a strange land, even become more alive. Dr. Tim O’Connell will lead this afternoon of poetry and pondering.
